How to Cope With an Elderly Mother Who Has Recently Become Bedridden

Steps

  1. Get her to a medical doctor who can properly diagnose her.
  2. Be prepared for a total life change if she is living with you.
  3. Search for the resources out there that can help you. There's a list of articles in the "Related wikiHows" section below that can help in everyday tasks and in caring for and entertaining an elderly person in general.
  4. Set up her room as if it's a hospital room well stocked with diapers, pad, ointments, pillows, etc.
  5. Medicare pays for wheel chairs, hospital beds, pretty much what the doctor orders.
  6. Ask for home health. They will come in nursing visits, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc.
  7. You need to know what will not paid for by the insurance.Look for organizations that will help in such areas, there are plenty out there.
  8. This is a 24/7 job so look for places that will come in and relief you even if it's for a few hours.Caring for a mothers in such conditions will demand a lot of your time, which, if not relieved might lead to a burn down.
  9. Keep a log book of your everyday tasks. When did she eat? what did she eat? What exercises did she do, medicines she took .. etc. This usually comes in handy when you go for doctor visits.
  10. As she starts getting better, start finding things for her to do such as simple crafts, reading, a simple game.
  11. Keep a calendar and remind her what day it is without implying she does not already know.
  12. Put pictures of her family on the wall.Keep her in the present.

  • Keep her independent, give her a washed cloth to clean her face and hand, let her know that she is not useless and that she will get most of what she lost back just that it will take time. And for yourself, well, your life is no longer about only you, and that sometimes can be a hard thing to handle. So, if you can go to the grocery store for even an hour cherish it. But find someone whom you can trust to come in and give you a break. Your mom will enjoy the new company as well
  • Remember, in the beginning she will be confused. She might lash out at you, throw things with her good arm. She might get upset because she can not remember certain events. She night grieve over the loss of a loved one who has been gone for years. Keep humor in the everyday chores. Make her laugh. Sing funny songs while you're changing a not so clean diaper and don't call them diapers, they are "adult underwear".

Warnings

  • Don't be negative, don't treat her like she is a burden, don't talk about financial problems in front of her, this will only hold her back and depress her more than she already is. Be positive because positive begets positive, and it is contagious.
