The odds are worse than for breast cancer: Strokes hit 1 in 5 women during their lifetime. Taking measures to lower stroke risk is somethingeverywoman should do. One easy step is to pick up your walking pace: Striding 3 miles an hour or faster can cut your risk of strokeandheart disease by half, according to a recent study published in the journalCirculation. (Bonus: It also reduces belly fat.)

Researchers followed 4,207 healthy men and women for 10 years. Every 6 months, the study volunteers filled in questionnaires on their physical activity and any heart issues that cropped up (the group was age 65 and older). The results revealed that people who regularly walked 3 miles an hour or faster had half the stroke—and heart disease—risk of those who walked 2 miles per hour or slower. Specifically, the faster walkers had a 53% lower risk of stroke and a 50% less chance of suffering a heart attack or heart failure. And the distance was very manageable: Walking only 7 blocks a day or more was enough to reap the benefits.

Not surprisingly, adults who reported being more active in general—doing things like mowing and raking their lawns, gardening, swimming, biking, and hiking—gained even more heart and stroke protection. So how do you know if you're going fast enough? Set a pace that has you breathing harder than normal, but still allows you to carry on a conversation. Imagine a 6 to 7 level of effort on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being taking it easy, 10 equaling going full-out.
